Give the Gift of Reiki

Why the Gift of Reiki

My first Reiki experience with my reiki mama Geryll Robinson transformed me.  I felt more connected to my present, made peace with my past and began to fully embrace my healing journey.  It did not happen over night.  There were a lot of tears, a lot of pain in my body from depression and unused energy, regret and pride.  My reiki moved me to commit to a yoga practice and to focus on me – to put on my own mask before I could serve anyone else.

My 36th Birthday

Each year I think of a way to serve in honor of my birthday.  That doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy a glass of wine or a big peace of cake.  I certainly do along with other pleasures.  It just makes me feel good to share my gift with others.  This year along with community yoga events, I will sharing the gift of reiki with you all.  Each week I will be gifting complimentary Reiki sessions to participants of our Hot Yoga on The Greenway series with Friends of Lafitte Greenway.  Click here for more details.

*Bonus*: Today through my birthday July 3,  I will be offering  discounted Reiki sessions. Gift one to yourself or to a loved one.  Here’s the details:

*Individual Reiki sessions : $36 through July 3, 2018

*That’s just about half off the regular investment of $70*

The Joy of Breastfeeding

I always knew I wanted to breastfeed. I just wasn’t sure how it would go. During my prenatal visits I promised my midwives, my doulas and myself that I wouldn’t give up and would trust the process.

Nursing is a Team Effort

It was a definite challenge breastfeeding Marley that first week. in the delivery room, one of the hospital staff told me basically that my boobs were too big and that I needed to take extra precautions to nurse.  This is definitely not something to tell a new parent.  We are already so open and vulnerable and can use all of the positive support that we can receive.

Luckily the hospital’s and my own lactation staff assured me that was not the case.  My boobs are amazing and they showed me how to hold my little one to nurse while also checking to make sure her air ways weren’t obstructed.  Those first few days, I still fumbled with comfortable positions to hold her and did not take it seriously that I needed to use boob cream and warm towels.   Well after about 5 days, my boobs were incredibly sore and it hurt for Marley to latch. Kim, my lactation specialist  of Nola Doula came over but I still felt like I was doing something wrong.

This is the formula that we tried.

By day 6, I became worried that Marley wasn’t getting enough milk because she kept crying around 10 pm and wanted to nurse back to back.  I was ready for the cluster feeding but it seemed as though she wasn’t getting satisfied at all.   Although I felt a twinge of guilt, we decided to give her some formula.  The poop she had after was  enough to step away from the formula.  Breastmilk poop is a watery light brown and yellow with seeds.  Formula poop is dark, thick and smelly.   Everyone’s decision whether to give their little one formula, breastmilk or a combination is unique to their journey.  The continued use of formula just wasn’t right for us.

Self-Care is Primary Care

The next day I checked back in with my doulas Kim (Noula Doula)  and Ellenie of Asc3nsion Art and really heeded their advice.  I used warm compresses on my boobs and gently massaged them.  I returned to nursing and the soreness lessened.  We were back in business.  It still took a while for me to feel comfortable getting Marley in and out of nursing positions.   Our journey got a lot easier over time.

Me and my doula/sista healer Ellenie at my baby shower

Now I feel comfortable nursing while leading a yoga class, eating at my favorite restaurants, or sending emails.   Nursing became our precious time where me and my little one were present with each other.  Nothing else going on around us really mattered.  Marley just made 9 months yesterday and is also enjoying table food.  Her faves are plain yogurt, fresh avocado and butternut squash soup.  More info on preparing food for infants soon.

Homemade butternut squash pops

To my new parents, enjoy your journey.    Give yourself permission to release some of the new parent guilt that creeps up in our heads time to time.  There’s no perfect parent or perfect way to parent.  Taking care of our little ones is a lifetime commitment.  Create a nursing community before your little one arrives if you can.  If you are unable to check out La Leche league and the Nola Breastfeeding Center

Share your journey and learn from others.  You are not alone.  Join our community!  If you’re in the New Orleans area, check out our weekly Baby and Me yoga and tea classes. We would love to have you.  Click here for more info

Club Yoga and Lunch Flow classes are led by Ohm Well Director Valerie McMillan.  Here’s more info about her:

About Valerie:

Valerie first experienced yoga in 2007, while living in Chicago and undergoing a complete lifestyle change. She lost over 70lbs and transitioned from a meat based to a plant based diet. In 2011, she developed a full -time yoga practice after completing her first 30-day challenge.

At the time, Valerie noticed she was often the only women of color in the classes she was taking and was determined to help the culture of yoga evolve in New Orleans. In late 2013, Valerie immersed herself in a 200-hour power yoga training with Free to Be Power Yoga. Valerie launched the Ohm Well in early 2015, which is a yoga and wellness company designed to help clients heal themselves from the inside out.

The Ohm Well promotes body positivity and caters to every skill and every age.  Specializations include: power and restorative yoga, yoga for beginners, senior fitness and workplace wellness.  As a former Senior City Planner with the City of New Orleans, Valerie launched the first ever workplace wellness yoga program for City employees, in conjunction with the Chief Administrative Office and the New Orleans Health Department.  After 5 years of service as a civil servant, Valerie parted ways with the City in order to promote health and wellness through the Ohm Well’s classes and workshops full time.  Black and Brown Bodies in Motion (BBM) is the Ohm Well’s first signature weekly class, which features curvy-body friendly yoga and meditation.  It arose out of a desire to address the invisibility of yogis of color in traditional yoga studios and classes.  BBM is the first and only yoga class in New Orleans designed for and open only to self-identified people of color.  BBM celebrated its 2nd year anniversary in June of 2017 and the class was featured in the Gambit weekly. In addition to teaching yoga, Valerie is also a new mom and is currently balancing her new journey of being a mother with growing and establishing a permanent location for The Ohm Well.

Meditation classes will be led by Ohm Well instructors Victoria and Ellenie.  Here’s more info about them:

About Victoria:

I have been enough lucky to have been surrounded by yoga and meditation my whole life. Growing up with my aunt, a yoga therapist and meditation teacher, and my older sister, an Ayurvedic practitioner and Reiki healer, I was drawn to yoga and holistic healing from an early age.

When I moved to New Orleans at the age of 18, I began learning Reiki with Valerie McMillan of the Ohm Well. My journey to Reiki has been a transformative experience;

Reiki allows me to ground myself in compassion, and find power in my sensitivity. I have been training and apprenticing with Valerie since 2015; and I am incredibly grateful for all I have learned from her.

Last summer, I had to opportunity to study in India, where I had the opportunity to expand my reverence for the incredible history of yogic philosophy and practice. In Dharamshala, I began to learn the teachings of Dzogchen. After I graduate from university this Spring, I hope to begin yoga instructor training, and expand my practice further.

Victoria will lead the meditation sessions February 22nd, March 1st and March 8th

Educator, Poet, Full Circle Doula, Asc3nding Herbalist, Reiki Practitioner, Food Literacy Educator, Artist and Designer- Ellenie Marie Cruz uses her given and learned talents to promote the art of ancestral practices to heal self, family and community. Motivated by social justice, she has shifted from being a high school English teacher to a free agent and entrepreneur promoting radical change through holistic wellness, self-care and community building. Ellenie received her Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary English Education and had a strong focus on her research of Spoken Word as a Method of Social Change and Education. Now she serves and impacts her community by providing a pop-up apothecary, herbal consultations and classes focused on using natural practices for self-care and wellness.  She is the sole Organizer of the NOLA Herb Gathering, has most recently published her first poetry book Saturn Return I: Glimpses of the past, and is expanding her visual project, “Portal, P****, Pilon” to a visual exhibition and interactive workshop to address sexual trauma experienced by women

Ellenie will lead the meditation classes on March 15th, 22th and 29th.

Ask for What You Want

Many of us may be used to helping others and being hesitant to ask for help in return. Or we may not ask for that promotion and instead wait longingly for it to be offered to us.

Give yourself permission to ask not only for what you need, but what you want.

As a new mom, I also get caught up with doing things for my little one and forget to do things for myself.  In order to take care of others, we need to take care of ourselves as well.  So there’s no guilt in me taking time to go to a yoga class, read a book or go to a coffee shop.  These are wants that are important to me and give me joy.

I’ve also been putting this idea to use more frequently in business matters as well.  I ask for sponsors and donations or yoga classes and even trips.  A lot of times I offer different trades of services as well.   I’m surprised at the positive responses I’ve received. All I had to do was ask.

We may not get a yes every time, but there’s no harm in putting in the request and letting the universe do the rest. So go ahead, ask for that promotion, raise or even time with that special someone.  You’re worth it!

XO,

Valerie

Prenatal Benefits

One of the bonuses of pregnancy is that you get amazing hair, skin and nails.  It was a delight to see my hair grow considerably thicker and longer over the course of 40 weeks. That is, when i wasn’t nauseous or tired from morning sickness ( in my case, it should have been called all day sickness)

I didn’t think about how it would grow toenails as well. They almost broke some nail clippers they had gotten so strong. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Well, there are worse things.

Here’s a pic of me right when I found out I was pregnant:

During pregnancy:

And now:

Big difference right?! My little one is a gift that keeps on giving. Aside from amazing genes and great hormones, my prenatal gummy vitamins and slow iron releasing tablets helped a lot. I started with the prescription vitamins and they tasted horrible!
