Black and Brown Bodies in Motion (BBM), is a collaboration with the Ohm Well’s Valerie McMillan and Wildseeds: The New Orleans Octavia Butler Emergent Strategy Collective. It features curvy-body friendly yoga and meditation. This weekly class centralizes the complex identities of Black and Brown individuals and is open to self-identified persons of color only. BBM is a direct response to the marginalization and or invisibility of yogis of color in traditional yoga studios and classes. The first of its kind, the pilot BBM class will be held at Dancing Grounds, with the goal to create more BBM classes around the city.
What to expect during class?
BBM classes are all-level power yoga classes and last one hour and fifteen minutes. Newcomers welcome! Feel free to take breaks whenever you need or sit in a restorative pose the entire class. Advanced practitioners are also welcome as modifications are provided to deepen and challenge your practice.
Students have been known to sweat, laugh and even cry during class. Community is built as we dance together in our bodies and create a musical harmony with our breath.
What to bring for class?
Bring yourself, maybe a friend, a mat, water and a towel. There are also mats available to borrow and no extra charge.
How much are classes?
A drop in class is $8. A five class package is $40 and includes one free Reiki session (a $45 value).
When are classes held?
Classes are held Sundays from 5 – 6:15 at Dancing Grounds, which is located at 3705 St. Claude Ave. Check out the link here to Dancing Grounds’ site.
